Family and Consumer Science

FN-I Food and Nutrition Core Students will develop basic nutritional concepts through the planning, purchasing, preparation and serving of nutritious foods. Careers and employment opportunities in this area will be explored. Recommended for ninth - eleventh graders.

TD-I Clothing and Textiles Core A study of clothing and textiles as it relates to culture and history as well as a study of design principles and applying them to construction and selection of clothing. Careers related to textiles and clothing will be explored. Recommended for ninth - eleventh graders. This course meets the mandate for ½ art credit.

D-2 Housing and Environment Core This course examines the housing options available and decision making regarding housing needs due to lifestyle, life cycle, and economic factors. Recommended for ninth - twelfth graders. This course meets the mandate for ½ art credit.

HD-I Human Development Core Students will explore the adolescent’s place in the family unit and the way one relates to persons older and younger. The fields of study and career opportunities in human development will be explored. Recommended for tenth - twelfth graders.

Independent Living This course identifies the challenges of adolescents as they assume adult responsibilities and prepare to live on their own. The students learn the importance of planning to achieve goals which will create the kind of future the students want. Topics covered include all aspects of financial management, purchasing a car, insurance, finding an apartment, food preparation, credit and health issues affecting young adults.

International Foods All of us have been influenced by the cooking of many nations. Whether it is because of our cultural heritage, acquaintances, travel experiences or a genuine interest in foods and cuisine, we are always trying new foods. This course explores culture, specific foods, ingredients and preparation techniques.

Creative Foods Creative Foods is an in depth, hands-on course in advanced food preparation techniques. Students will also learn about the importance of food appearance and presentation. Originality is encouraged in group and individual projects.

Adolescent Psychology This course will help students understand themselves and become more committed to responsibility for their own personal growth. Students will learn about many important mental and emotional developmental states as well as identifying adolescent crises and coping strategies.

Sports Nutrition This course relates the concepts of nutrition, diet, and exercise to athletic performance. It encompasses an examination of the role of nutrients in the body, diet-related conditions, special diets, diet analysis, nutrition for athletes, lifetime fitness, and the effect of food preparation techniques on diet and performance.

College Survival Skills This course is designed to assist you in looking at, applying to and surviving your first year at college. All aspects of college life are covered. . Lectures, class discussion, speakers, field trips and activities will help you:

  • Understand college selection, admission and financing
  • Examine and understand the importance of freedom and responsibilities as a young adult
  • Understand the management of resources
